A ping test sends small data packets to a server and measures how long each one takes to travel there and back (round-trip time), plus whether any packets are lost along the way.
Under 30ms is excellent, 30–80ms is good for most browsing and streaming, and anything under 150ms is generally fine for online gaming and video calls. Above that you may start noticing lag.
Packet loss usually means network congestion, a weak WiFi signal, a failing router, or an issue somewhere between you and the destination server. Occasional loss under 1–2% is normal.
Most servers respond to ping, but some block ICMP requests for security reasons. If a host doesn't respond, it may still be online — it's just configured to ignore pings.
